STEELWORKERS, CROWN CORK REACH AGREEMENT ON REPRESENTATION
AND CONTRACT FOR WORKERS IN CAROLINA, PUERTO RICO
PITTSBURGH, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers of America (USW) and the Crown Cork de Puerto Rico plant have reached agreement to recognize the union as exclusive bargaining agent at the Carolina, Puerto Rico, plant.
A four-year contract was ratified by the plant's 84 production and maintenance workers on May 26 and became effective June 1.
As the negotiations pertain to the Puerto Rico plant, USW vice president Leon Lynch, who negotiated the agreement for the union, said:
"The company has opened the door to healthy labor-management relations that augur well for both sides. The need for this type of mutual-problem solving was never more vital to both the workers' and the company's interests than it is in the highly competitive global economy in which Crown is involved.
"We look forward to this new relationship with Crown Cork, and to expanding it to other companies in this industry."
The USW and Crown commended the workers and both bargaining staffs for overcoming long-standing differences to work out the agreement.
Crown Cork is a manufacturer of metal and plastic packaging containers and packaging machinery.
