STEELWORKERS, ALUMINUM WORKERS AUTHORIZE STRIKES AGAINST ALCOA AND REYNOLDS IF CONTRACT TALKS FAIL

CLEVELAND, May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) and the Aluminum, Brick and Glass Workers International Union (ABG) have voted overwhelmingly to authorize strikes against Alcoa and Reynolds Metals Co. if their negotiators determine such action is necessary, it was announced today.
The cumulative vote among USWA and ABG members at plant location meetings concluded yesterday was 98 percent in support of strike authorization.
The USWA and the ABG are negotiating with the two companies against a deadline of midnight, May 31.
George Becker, USWA International vice president for administration, and John Murphy, assistant to the president of the ABG, are the unions' chief negotiators. In a joint statement, they said:
"Our members are fully aware of the issues involved and by their vote have instructed to resolve them to their satisfaction. We believe sufficient time remains to reach agreement before the expiration date."
The USWA and ABG together represent more than 11,700 members at 12 Alcoa plants and more than 5,100 at 16 Reynolds Metals plants.
The current agreement was to have expired May 31, 1992, but the companies and the unions agreed to a one-year extension with the hope they could settle on a longer-term contract by Oct. 2, 1992. That effort failed, the union said.
