STEELWORKERS' PENNSYLVANIA LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE EVENTS SCHEDULE

STEELWORKERS' PENNSYLVANIA LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE EVENTS SCHEDULE
The annual statewide three-day legislative conference of the United Steelworkers of America (USW) will be at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center in Hershey starting this Monday (Feb. 3) at 9:30 a.m. and ending Feb. 5, it was announced today (Jan. 31).
About 500 delegates representing 85,000 active USW members and more than 150,000 retired members will gather to hear reports from Pennsylvania congressional and state leaders, plus invited representatives of the Democratic campaign for U.S. president.
No endorsements are expected to be made for the presidential candidates campaign or the U.S. Senate seat at the conference.
The Steelworkers union has a number of union members seeking delegate positions in the state primary for the presidential candidacies of U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), U.S. Sen. Bob Kerrey (D-Nebraska) and Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton. Representatives for each of these candidates have been invited to speak at the conference.
A USW-led 'all labor rally' on Tuesday (Feb. 4) will be held in the Capitol Rotunda at 11:30 a.m. in support of the priority legislative bills targeted by the USW and the AFL-CIO for passage in the 175th General Assembly session.
Foremost among the legislative proposals with USW support are a series of bills to ban employer use of "striker replacements" (HB 560-567 and HB 1060). John H. Reck, chair of the USW legislative committee and director for the union's District 7 in Philadelphia, calls the ban on replacement workers in labor disputes "a long overdue response to workplace fairness that will eliminate the destructiveness of employer use of scabs in Pennsylvania."
In addition, the rally will be opposing yesterday's release by the Senate Labor and Industry Committee of the "Workers Compensation Reform" bill (HB 2140). "This so-called reform package undercuts the basic standards established for injured workers in the private sector," Reck said.
The following is a listing of the appearances for speakers who will be addressing the Steelworkers Legislative Conference Feb. 3-5. Each daily session is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m., with adjournment in the early afternoon to allow delegate lobbying activities.
