STEELWORKER STATEMENT ON LTV PETITION TO REVOKE CONTRACT
PITTSBURGH, June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- LTV Steel (NYSE: QLTV) has informed the United Steelworkers of America (USW) that it is today filing a petition asking the Bankruptcy Court in New York City for permission to reject its Collective Bargaining Agreement, the union said.
Anthony Rainaldi, chairman of the union's Negotiating Committee, issued the following statement in response:
"LTV's court action comes after it walked out of negotiations and is the result of a promise the company made to its creditors. For our part, the union regards this action as an official declaration of war and we will act accordingly.
"We have repeatedly told the company that if its petition results in the rejection of our labor contract, a work stoppage will follow, just as it did when Wheeling-Pittsburgh rejected its agreement with us.
"There is no question that the company risks committing suicide with this step and that the negotiating differences between us do not warrant that risk. The company is stubbornly sticking to all of its concession demands, both for active and retired workers and is initiating this legal action notwithstanding its contract commitments.
"We are today withdrawing union involvement in all labor-management participation programs at LTV. Any scheduled participation meetings will be cancelled immediately and all such activity will cease. In addition, the union is in the process of establishing work stoppage and lockout assistance schools and making all the other preparations for the upcoming fight."
LTV Steel employs 14,000 Steelworkers. Its operations are located in East Chicago, Ind.; Cleveland, Warren, Youngstown and Elyria, Ohio; Hennepin, Ill. Aliquippa and Pittsburgh, Pa.; Eveleth, Minn.; and Counce, Tenn.
