STC SUBMARINE SYSTEMS WINS US$124 MILLION CONTRACT TO SUPPLY FIRST UNDERSEA OPTICALLY AMPLIFIED LINK IN EUROPE

LONDON, June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- STC Submarine Systems, a division of Northern Telecom (NYSE: NT), has been awarded a US$124 million (80 million pounds) contract to supply and install the first European link to use undersea optical amplifiers together with the longest unrepeatered system in the world.
The 1,800-kilometer fiber-optic linkn?corporates passive optical devices, or amplifiers, within the undersea cable, which "stretch" the distance covered by the cable while maintaining high bit-rates and reliability.
The contract for this system, known as "Rioja," has been awarded by Telefonica, Spain; Deutsche Bundespost Telekom, Germany; Belgacom, Belgium; PTT Telecom, Netherlands; BT and Mercury Communications, both of the United Kingdom; and Telecom Denmark, for completion in 1994. Up to 36 other telecommunications companies worldwide have underwritten their intention to carry traffic through the Rioja system, which will link Santander in Spain with Porthcurno in the United Kingdom, Veurne in Belgium and Alkmaar in the Netherlands in three separate segments. All of these segments will use the new optically amplified technology, and two of them, Spain to the UK and UK to Belgium, will incorporate undersea optical amplifiers.
