CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER (15) This is an opulent affair, dripping in fine silks and breathtaking colour. Action director Ching Siu-Tong, who choreographed the skirmishes in Zhang Yimou's previous films Hero and House Of Flying Daggers, excels here with bloody and brutal aerial assaults.

THIS IS ENGLAND (18) Two-disc version of Shane Meadows' autobiographical snapshot of life in 1980s Britain. Haunted by the death of his father in the Falklands, an adolescent loner becomes isolated from his caring mother, forging a friendship with a skinhead rebel and his band of misfits. The dynamics of the gang shift when a jailbird returns to the estate, encouraging the disaffected youngsters to pledge their allegiance to the National Front.

RENO 911! MIAMI (15) Lieutenant Jim Dangle presides over a bizarre team of law enforcers. When Dangle arranges a trip to a police convention in Florida, the team is ecstatic, cramming on to a stuffy coach for the gruelling cross-country journey. Arriving in Miami a little worse for wear, the team is shocked to discover that every cop in the area is under quarantine and the only thing standing between lawlessness is... urn... them.

THE PAINTED VEIL (12) Society belle Kitty Garstin is browbeaten into marrying dull bacteriologist Edward Norton. Hungry for affection, Kitty embarks on an affair, but when her husband finds out she has no choice but to go with him to a remote cholera-ravaged village where they face a fight for their lives as well as their marriage.

SHUT UP & SING (15L) In 2003 chart-topping Dixie Chicks caused international outrage when they criticised George W Bush. In the aftermath of their comments, thousands of American fans burned their Dixie Chicks albums and sent them hate mail and death threats. This fascinating documentary follows the group through those emotional ups and downs.
