STATUS OF TURKEY POINT POWER PLANT

STATUS OF TURKEY POINT POWER PLANT
Following the passage of Hurricane Andrew earlier today, both Turkey

Point nuclear units remain in a safe shutdown condition.
Facilities outside the containment buildings, and adjacent to the two fossil-fired generating units that share the site, did experience significant damage from the high winds. The nuclear systems of the plant are maintaining the nuclear fuel in a safe condition during shutdown.
Facilities damaged include the transmission yard and substation, as well as structures on and around the turbine deck, which is the electrical generating portion of the plant. Turkey Point is located south of Miami in southern Dade County where the eye of the hurricane made landfall.
Special request of local Dade area news media:
As phone lines in the area are down and communications to and from the site are limited, FPL is requesting assistance from local Dade area news media with the following message:
"FPL would like the families of all employees at the site to know that everyone is fine and there have been no injuries or other problems. Additionally a temporary telephone 'voice mail' box has been established for families of Turkey Point employees to call and leave messages regarding the safety and well being of their homes and family members. The "voice mail" mail box phone number for families of Turkey Point employees is 305-552-2600.
This phone number is for family members with relatives working at the Turkey Point power plant only. No other messages will be handled by personnel receiving and delivering messages.
