STATISTICAL OFFICE: OVER 2 MILLION PEOPLE LIVE IN MACEDONIA.
According to the official statistics, 2,073,702 people lived in Macedonia at the end of 2016. The most numerous were the young in the reproductive period; 16.6 percent were children younger than 14 and 13.1 percent were elderly citizens aged over 65.
The data of the State Statistical Office shows that 2,144 people left Macedonia and 8,887 changed their home address.
In 2016, 23,199 children were born, of whom 23,002 were born alive and 197 were stillborn. By the age of the mother, most children, 34.1 percent, were born to mothers aged 25 to 29. The value of the total fertility rate of in 2016 was 1.50 live children per woman.
The State Statistical Office says that 88 percent of the children born in 2016 were born to parents who were married and that the fertility drop was a result of the later age at which men and women marry.
In 2016, 13,199 marriages were concluded and 1,985 couples got divorced. The average age at which women and men get married for the first time is 26.5 and 29.3 respectively.
A total of 20,421 people died in 2016. The average age at which men and women died was 70.3 and 74.7 respectively. The most frequent causes of death in Macedonia were the diseases of the circulatory system, 53.5 percent, neoplasm, 19 percent, endocrine, nutritive and metabolic diseases, 5.5 percent, etc.
As a result of the dropping birth rate and rising death rate, the natural growth rate in 2016 was 1.2 percent (per thousand of citizens).
Sources of information about Macedonia's population are the population censuses taken in 1921, 1931, 1948, 1953, 1961, 1971, 1981, 1991, 1994 and 2002.
