STATEWIDE CONSUMER USED OIL COLLECTION PROGRAM LAUNCHED BY DISCOUNT AUTO PARTS

LAKELAND, Fla., March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Discount Auto Parts has announced a statewide reclamation program for the collection and reprocessing of used motor oil, and expects to collect more than 250,000 gallons of used oil during the first year.
"We tested the program in 18 locations for 18 months," said company president Denis Fontaine, "and collected more than 10,000 gallons of used oil with virtually no promotional support." Now the effort has been expanded to each of the 164 stores throughout the state, and will be supported by a highly visible consumer education effort as part of the company's $4 million advertising campaign.
A primary focus of the program is the do-it-yourselfers who make up Discount Auto Parts' main customer base. "We want to encourage our customers, and all motorists, to keep oil out of our water supply by offering them a convenient, clean and safe method of disposing of used oil," said Fonatine.
The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that two-thirds of the nearly 400 million gallons of used motor oil produced by do-it- yourselfers nationally each year is disposed of improperly. One quart of used oil can contaminate up to 250,000 gallons of drinking water, produce a slick on the surface two acres wide, kill aquatic plants and animals and damage water treatment facilities.
Consumers can now dispose of up to five gallons of used motor, hydraulic and transmission oils per visit in any Discount Auto Parts store at no charge. The oil must be in a clean plastic container, such as an empty milk jug or a gallon motor oil jug. Gasoline, antifreeze, carburetor cleaner, paints, varnishes and other similar substances are unacceptable.
Steve Joiner, the company's used oil program coordinator, said the quarter million gallons of used oil targeted for collection in year one will increase the amount of oil brought in by do-it-yourselfers to Florida's collection centers during 1991 by almost 25 percent. He said the recycling program is operated in conjunction with Valvoline and its used oil subsidiary, Ecogard.
"We are committed to playing a significant role in addressing this critically important environment challenge in our state," said Fonatine, who pledged Discount Auto Parts' long-term support.
