STATEMENT OF LIGGETT GROUP INC. ON THE
PLAINTIFF'S DISMISSAL OF THE 'CIPOLLONE' CASE
DURHAM, N.C., Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- In response to the dismissal of "Cipollone v. Liggett Group Inc.," the cigarette product liability case recently before the United States Supreme Court, Josiah Murray, Liggett's General Counsel and Senior Vice President, made the following comments:
"The decision to dismiss the 'Cipollone' case does not surprise us. For four decades the cigarette industry has been successful in defending itself in these cases, never settling nor paying any damages or compensation. Juries have consistently recognized in these cases that smokers are not forced to smoke and are not uninformed of the risks that have been claimed to be associated with smoking. Liggett believes that juries will continue to find that every person is responsible for her or his own life-style decisions. Liggett will continue to defend vigorously the actions which remain pending against it."
