STATEMENT FROM CHRYSLER CORPORATION RE: NEW JAPANESE VER
HIGHLAND PARK, Mich., March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a

statement from Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C) regarding new Japanese VER:
MITI'S new VER quota is a small step in the right direction.
The sales of Japanese imports have been running at a l.65 million-a- year rate, anyway. They've simply set the new limit at their current sales level. This action, therefore, does not represent in any way a step back or concessions from Japan.
The Japanese manufacturers are continuing to expand transplant levels in this country. We believe that to be meaningful the VER levels should be significantly reduced, perhaps to one million units a year or less, to get back to a level playing field for everybody.
