STATEMENT BY THE PITTSBURGH NEWSPAPER UNIONS UNITY COUNCIL
The Pittsburgh Newspaper Unions Unity Council today issued the following statement:
"The Pittsburgh Newspaper Unions Unity Council denies unequivocally the Pittsburgh Press' charge that youth carriers were asked by the unions to use confidential subscriber lists to distribute the Greater Pittsburgh Advertiser.
"In fact, the Unity Council's instructions to youth carriers specifically state, 'we would like you to deliver one (Greater Pittsburgh Advertiser) to each occupied home on your route.
"According to George Curtin, Unity Council Coordinator, 'We would never ask youth carriers to do anything that could be construed as unethical. The question of confidential lists is nothing more than a smokescreen designed to intimidate youth carriers and disrupt the distribution of the Greater Pittsburgh Advertiser.'
"Last week, the Pittsburgh Press editor Angus McEacharn, was quoted in the Greensburg Tribune-Review as saying the youth carriers were 'either at summer camp or they just don't give a damn.' He further stated the Greater Pittsburgh Advertiser's distribution system was in chaos because 'they are using our kids.'
"'We are outraged that the Pittsburgh Press would use intimidation tactics against young people who have been loyal and hard working employees,' Curtin said.
"If the kids really are as ineffective and unreliable as McEacharn claims, why are they being intimidated and accused of violating their contract with the Press? And if the carriers are so effective that they elicit this kind of response from the Press, why indeed are they being fired by the Pittsburgh Press?"
