STATEMENT BY PEPSI-COLA IN RESPONSE TO ALLEGATIONS RAISED
BY RALLY ORGANIZERS AT DETROIT BOTTLING FACILITY
DETROIT, March 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Following is a statement from Pepsi-Cola Company in response to allegations raised by rally organizers at Detroit Bottling Facility, given by Gary Gerdemann, public affairs:
ALLEGATION: Pepsi-Cola violated its agreement with the City of Detroit.
PEPSI MAINTAINS: The tax abatement matter is now before the Michigan State Tax Commission, which will decide the issue. We expect this process to take at least six months.
ALLEGATION: The new Pepsi plant in Forest Park is non-union.
PEPSI MAINTAINS: Not true. Pepsi's new plant employs 429 workers. Of those, 400 are members of Teamsters Local 337. The remaining 29 non- union employees, when offered to join, chose to decline union membership.
ALLEGATION: Pepsi-Cola misled Detroit's citizens, and instead of creating jobs for Detroiters, Pepsi actually laid off 180 Detroit workers.
PEPSI MAINTAINS: Pepsi did not mislead Detroit's citizens. Our intention was clearly stated. We fulfilled what we intended to do and we are committed to remaining a partner in the growth of the City of Detroit.
ALLEGATION: Pepsi promised that the new plant would be shielded from the community by a berm; no shielding exists at the new site.
PEPSI MAINTAINS: Not true. The fact is, a 6-foot berm does exist. Pepsi took the time and care necessary to design an aesthetic shield without creating an eyesore for the community. The intent was never to completely hide the 35-foot building; to do so would require much more than what is considered to be a "berm."
ALLEGATION: Pepsi-Cola officials promised the community $150,000 in cash and equipment. To date, no arrangements have been completed for the transfer of money or equipment to the community.
PEPSI MAINTAINS: Not true. A check has been issued to construct a park for the community. The issuance of the check was contingent upon the city's preparedness to go forward with the construction of the park. From the start, Pepsi has been ready and willing to fund the community project.
ALLEGATION: Contrary to prior agreements with Pepsi-Cola, no jobs were made available to Forest Park residents.
PEPSI MAINTAINS: Not true. In fact, it was a Forest Park resident and plant employee who first brought the rally plans to Pepsi's attention.
