 STATEMENT BY LEONARD MILLER, CHAIRMAN OF LENNAR CORPORATION;
LENNAR REITERATES COMMITMENT TO REBUILDING EFFORT
MIAMI, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Lennar Corporation (NYSE: LEN) today released the following statement:
As Dade County's and Florida's largest homebuilder and longtime community leader, Lennar recognizes the critical role it must play in the rebuilding process. We welcome this responsibility and commit ourselves to working tirelessly to accomplish that goal. However, as we focus on this complex task, we find ourselves dealing with baseless lawsuits and unsupported accusations. For that reason, I am taking this time to clearly state Lennar's position on several important issues.
We want you to know that our hearts go out to all those who have suffered from the force of Hurricane Andrew. We too have experienced the devastation. Many of our employees have suffered personally. We are shaken by the impact that this horrible storm has had on our community. But, we have not merely been observers. Since the day after the storm, we mobilized our entire Lennar team to begin the rebuilding process. Lennar divisions outside of Dade County sent caravans of trucks with food, water, clothing and other basic essentials to the most affected parts of our community. Our Dade County team, the home team, has been working around the clock to mobilize a rebuilding effort. Our mortgage subsidiaries have offered special payment deferrals as part of our 9-point plan to assist our homeowners.
We would like to thank our customers for their continuing faith in Lennar. We are gratified that hundreds of you have expressed your desire to have Lennar rebuild your homes. Our goal is to respond to your building needs with speed and with commitment to high quality so that we can rebuild your community at the same time we rebuild your individual home.
We will continue our 38-year commitment to this community by responding to this great challenge. Our company has always been dedicated to building quality homes. It has always been our absolute policy to comply with all building codes, rules and regulations. We have no knowledge that any violations of this policy have occurred. We have always insisted that our subcontractors adhere to the same policy. We stand behind the homes we build and we stand up to our responsibility as we have done for 38 years.
There has been talk of construction defects. Those allegations have included Lennar homes. We are indignant over these false accusations. We have just overcome the strongest hurricane to ever make landfall in my lifetime. We have endured sustained winds that were measured at 150 to 200 mph and even greater in some instances. Homestead Air Force Base was completely destroyed. The Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant sustained damage. Bloomingdale's lost its third floor and Burger King its headquarters. In the southern part of our county, the devastation is virtually total. Suffice to say, we cannot always look to human error to explain loss in a natural disaster. This is not a time to point fingers and engage in a witch-hunt. This is a time to regroup and rebuild.
To the people of Lennar, I would like to say publicly that I am proud of you. You have held your heads high. You have not allowed your attention to be diverted by the negative and disruptive name calling which has arisen. You have maintained the Lennar integrity and determination that has always driven our company.
As for baseless lawsuits aimed at Lennar, I would like you to know that Lennar will fight any attempt to discredit our company and subvert the rebuilding process. Some attorneys have preyed on the emotions of people who have lost so much at the hands of Hurricane Andrew, a terrible natural disaster. The time and energy devoted to these lawsuits are disrupting the rebuilding process and are a disservice to our community. We will aggressively defend ourselves against these lawsuits and will pursue compensation for the costs we incur in our defense. We have absolutely no intention of settling any of these suits out of court to provide quick attorneys' fees.
Times like these demand responsible action. We need leaders to help this community regroup and rebuild. We need roofers and carpenters, not lawyers. We need action, not accusations. We need to draw on the best and the brightest in our community, not succumb to the worst.
We also encourage the media to clear up the confusion in evaluating all aspects of construction in South Florida. In an effort to quickly provide information to the public, many statements have been presented as fact before all pertinent details have been carefully investigated. For example, conflicting stories about wind speeds have appeared in the local press. These reports have only added to confusion and anger on the part of storm victims. We need to carefully and methodically sort through all the data to avoid victimizing reputable companies like Lennar through unjust accusations.
Let me conclude by saying that Lennar Corporation stands proudly as a leading citizen of our community. Our company was born here 38 years ago, and our roots are deep and solid. We intend to continue providing community leadership and maintaining our commitment to quality and value that has been our trademark all these years.
-- All responsible citizens of Dade County share the need to
 mobilize a massive building effort.
-- As one of the financially strongest builders in America and as
a responsible company, Lennar fully intends to be a leader in
rebuilding our homes and our community.
-- A very small minority of irresponsible individuals would subvert
the rebuilding process through divisive and expensive litigation.
-- Lennar will stand strong and fight this inappropriate and
wasteful litigation while at the same time working tirelessly in
 the rebuilding process.
-- This is a critical moment in the life of this community. We will
work together shoulder to shoulder to rebuild and repair the
 community that we love.
