STATE SLOGANEERS SAY YES!
DETROIT, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Michigan's search for a new slogan to compete against the 13-year-old "YES MICHIGAN!" theme has attracted 525 entries. Over 23 ad agencies and 130 individuals sent in suggested themes to Brogan & Partners Advertising/Public Relations, which volunteered to coordinate the effort. The state of Michigan initiated the "Say Yes To Michigan" slogan back in 1980, to promote the economic, tourism and agriculture interests of the state. In the mid-1980s, the slogan was modified to "YES MICHIGAN!" Now in the 1990s, the question is whether this slogan -- or a variation of it -- is still a powerful promotional tool for the state. "We got a terrific response," said Marcie Brogan, managing partner of the agency, "from ad agencies like Detroit's DMB&B, Flint's JT Lyons, Grand Rapids' Sefton, as well as from poets, lawyers, homemakers, retirees, and students from all over Michigan." The most popular suggestions were: "Michigan ... again and again"; and "Thumbs up for Michigan." The most unique suggestion received was "Michigan. It must be the water." A judges committee comprised of heads of state departments which use the slogan -- Travel, Commerce, Agriculture -- are scheduled to get together to pick five or six out of the 525 to evaluate along with "YES MICHIGAN!" Consideration will be given to further judging the slogans through surveys and focus groups. Brogan & Partners Advertising/Public Relations is a full-service agency located in Detroit. -0- 8/20/93 /CONTACT: Barbara Palazzolo of Brogan & Partners, 313-874-8570/
