STATE SECRETARY OF BUSINESS, TRANSPORTATION AND HOUSING AGENCY BECOMES SOCALGAS VP OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Gas Co. announced today that Thomas S. Sayles, 42, current Secretary of the California Business, Transportation and Housing Agency, will join the company as its new vice president of Public Affairs, effective Jan. 3, 1994.
Sayles replaces former vice president of Public Affairs, Mike Neiggemann, who retired in September after 35 years with the company.
"Tom will bring an aggressive and sophisticated perspective to his new responsibilities," said The Gas Co.'s Chief Executive Officer Dick Farman. "He also will bring a first-hand understanding of the regulatory processes that govern many of the state's activities and agencies as well as a sensitivity to the effect of those regulations on business and the community at large."
Appointed to his state cabinet position by Gov. Pete Wilson in January 1993, Sayles directs 13 state departments and a number of boards and offices that represent more than 40,000 employees and a budget of over $7 billion, including: the Departments of Transportation, State Banking, Corporations, Alcoholic Beverage Control, Housing and Community Development, Motor Vehicles, Savings and Loan, Real Estate, California Housing Finance Agency, Office of Real Estate Appraisers, Office of Traffic Safety, the California Highway Patrol and the Stephen P. Teale Data Center.
Before his current responsibilities, he served as Commissioner of Corporations for two years, regulating the sale of securities in California, overseeing the state's health maintenance organizations and numerous financial institutions. He also served as chairman of the Governor's Los Angeles Revitalization Task Force, which was established after the Spring 1992 Los Angeles riots.
From 1982 to 1990, Sayles was with TRW Inc., where he served as the senior legal counsel. Before joining TRW, he served as a Deputy Attorney General in the California Attorney General's Office and, later, as an Assistant U.S. Attorney.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate from Stanford University, Sayles earned his law degree from the Harvard University School of Law and later attended the UCLA Executive Management Program.
The Los Angeles resident has been active in his community. Sayles previously served as a member of the California Community Colleges Board of Governors, which oversees the state's 107 community colleges, and was a member of Los Angeles Southwest Community College Foundation in South Central Los Angeles.
