STATE PROTECTS FARMLAND AT AG PROGRESS DAYS

 ROCKSPRING, Pa., Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Agricultural Land Preservation Board today approved easement purchases for nine farms in five counties, protecting 1,323 acres of prime farmland from development.
 Under the state's farmland preservation program, which began in 1989, the state and counties purchase development rights from farmers to guarantee that their farms will remain as agricultural land.
 The board met in this Centre County community during Ag Progress Days, an annual agricultural exposition.
 State Agriculture Secretary and Board Chairman Boyd E. Wolff said that with the latest approvals, a total of 41,148 acres of farmland in 25 counties has been preserved.
 Today's approvals, listed by county, owner, township, acreage and purchase cost:
 -- Berks -- Helene Fritz, Jefferson Township, 156 acres, $201,500.
 -- Berks -- George Lichtenwalner, Maxatawney Township, 148 acres, $249,500.
 -- Cumberland -- Richard and Shelva Mains, West Pennsboro Township, 171 acres, $317,391.
 -- Lancaster -- J. Robert and Yvonne I. Musser, Manor Township, 81 acres, $163,378.
 -- Lehigh -- Richard H. and Ray H. Myers, Lower Milford Township, 266 acres, $996,975.
 -- Lehigh -- Sterling and Warren Raber, Lowhill Township, 212 acres, $454,995.
 -- Union -- Amos and Sarah Kauffman, Kelly Township, 163 acres, $162,610.
 -- Union -- Donald E. and Carol A. Metzler, Gregg Township, 57 acres, $54,938.
 -- Union -- John A. Zechman, Buffalo Township, 70 acres, $61,200.
