STATE COMPTROLLER TO PUBLISH NAMES OF PEOPLE ENTITLED TO A SHARE
OF CASH AND PERSONAL PROPERTY VALUED AT OVER $14.5 MILLION
TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- State Comptroller Gerald Lewis announced today that his agency is publishing the names of over 52,000 people who are entitled to a share of cash and personal property valued at over $14.5 million.
Lewis' office publishes the names and last known Florida address of the owners twice a year in newspaper tabloids. The insert will appear in about 30 Florida newspapers tomorrow.
Abandoned property is money or items left unclaimed, including bank accounts, utility refunds and contents of safe deposit boxes. Florida law requires holding companies to report unclaimed property to the Comptroller's Office after a legal dormancy period, which is generally seven years. Cash items are deposited into the State School Fund, a trust account that benefits Florida's school children.
Since the program began in 1961, over $229 million in unclaimed funds has been paid to the state. Roughly, one-third has been claimed by residents. There is no statute of limitations in claiming your money.
"We need your help. If you see your name in the tabloid, a relative or friend, call our office to make a claim. This money is yours, and we want to get it into the hands of the rightful owners," said Lewis.
Owners or heirs can file claims with the Department of Banking and Finance at any time. Call the Comptroller's toll-free hotline number at 800-848-3792 to make a claim or to see if your name is on the list.
