STATE'S FIRST RETAIL NATURAL GAS OUTLET OPENS TODAY

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Donnini Enterprises, Peoples Gas and Shell Oil Company today unveiled the state's first retail outlet offering compressed natural gas to customers operating alternative-fueled vehicles.
The retail outlet will be located at the Shell service station, located at 9730 Alternate Highway A1A in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and owned by Donnini Enterprises, Palm Beach County's largest independent gasoline retailer.
"The recent federal clean air legislation and an executive order from Gov. Lawton Chiles are good signals that many fleet owners in the area will begin conversions of their vehicles to use clean-burning natural gas," said Gerald J. Donnini, president of Donnini Enterprises. "We are pleased to be the first in the state to provide a convenient location for them to fill their tanks."
Donnini Enterprises is the first business in the state to utilize the new alternative motor fuel program approved by the Florida Public Service Commission last January. The program was designed to provide an infrastructure platform for the conversion of vehicles from gasoline to natural gas whereby the utility and natural gas vehicle (NGV) customers share in the fill station cost.
"Conversion to natural gas as an engine fuel has been delayed because of the high costs associated with NGV filling facilities. The new program, as approved, will mitigate the high-cost problem and kick start the NGV business," said Tom Ross, director for Alternate Fuels at Peoples Gas.
Peoples Gas System, Inc., will be the station's first large customer at the natural gas vehicle facility. Peoples Gas is the state's largest natural gas utility, serving about 200,000 customers throughout Florida.
"Shell is pleased to participate in opening Florida's first retail facility for compressed natural gas. Opening this facility will assist in determining the public's acceptance of compressed natural gas as an alternative fuel," said Bill Schutzenhofer, vice president Marketing Shell Oil Company.
Several operations around the state, including People's Gas, use natural gas vehicles. Some of those include the St. Petersburg Police Department; Miami-based Entenmann's Bakery; the City of North Miami; Miami International Airport; Neighborly Senior Services in Pinellas County and the Daytona News Journal.
