STARS AND WORLDCOM SIGN AGREEMENT WITH IDB COMMUNICATIONS GROUP
HOUSTON, March 6 /PRNewswire/ -- STARS/WORLDCOM (Satellite Transmission and Reception Specialists and World Communications, Inc.) Chief Executive Officer David G. Olson, announced today that TeleColumbus AG has signed an agreement with IDB Communications Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: IDBX) of Los Angeles for the acquisition of World Communications, Inc. ("WorldCom") and STARS. Both WorldCom and STARS are subsidiaries of the Swiss-based TeleColumbus AG. Under the agreement, IDB, WorldCom and STARS will be combined.
Edward R. Cheramy, IDB president, stated that one of the principal reasons for pursuing the STARS alignment was the outstanding reputation of STARS in the telecommunications industry. Cheramy remarked, "One of the principal attractions to STARS was STARS pre-eminent reputation in the transportable business." Present plans call for all IDB transportables to be operated out of the STARS Houston International Teleport facility. "The combination of STARS/IDB transportables and flyaway units will be a major force in the industry," Cheramy added.
STARS' Olson said, "This is a dynamic opportunity to build a major market force that will provide enhanced services to all of our customers. The combination of the best of these three entities will result in an extremely strong participant at the forefront of the evolving telecommunications industry. I am pleased to be associated with IDB in this venture and I know that STARS and WorldCom are eager to begin this new partnership."
WorldCom generated approximately $90 million in revenues from international private line and long distance services. STARS provides domestic and international television program transmission services as well as transportable operations. STARS also provides private line telecommunications services to Mexico, Europe, Central and South America through its headquarters in Houston.
