STARBUCKS REPORTS SALES FOR AUGUST

SEATTLE, Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ-SBUX) today reported sales of $14.0 million for the four weeks ended Aug. 22, 1993, an increase of 71 percent from $8.2 million in the same four-week period of fiscal 1992. On a comparable store sales basis (stores open for at least 13 months), sales increased 15 percent.
For the 47 weeks ended Aug. 22, 1993, total sales were $140.9 million, an increase of 71 percent from the year-earlier 47 week period of $82.2 million. Comparable store sales during the 47 week period ended Aug. 22, 1993 increased 21 percent.
Starbucks ended its 1992 fiscal year on Sept. 27, 1992, with 154 stores, including three licensed airport stores. Since that time, 86 stores, including seven licensed airport stores, have been opened: 17 stores in the first quarter, 25 in the second quarter, 31 stores in the third quarter, and thirteen in July and August, bringing to 240 the total number of retail stores located in, and the areas surrounding, Seattle, Washington; Chicago, Illinois; Vancouver, B.C.; Portland, Oregon; Denver, Colorado; Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco, California; and Washington, D.C. Starbucks plans to open 11 additional locations, for a total of 97 stores opened during fiscal year 1993.
Due to the withdrawal of Marriott International Corporation from Marriott Terminal Services (Japan), Starbucks' licensed kiosk at Tokyo's Narita Airport will close this month along with several other retailers and restaurants. This will have no effect on Starbucks' remaining licensed airport stores which are operated by Host Marriott. Starbucks plans to continue licensing additional airport stores with Host Marriott.
The Company plans to open 125 stores in fiscal year 1994 and to enter at least two new markets, currently anticipated to include major metropolitan areas on the East Coast of the United States. In addition to its 240 retail stores and licensed airport stores, the Company has a national direct mail business with customers in every state as well as a specialty sales division serving a wholesale club, a specialty sales department store chain, a national bookstore chain, a regional airline, fine restaurants and institutions.
