STARBUCKS REPORTS FIRST QUARTER SALES: SALES UP 71% WITH 10% GROWTH IN COMPARABLE STORE SALES

SEATTLE, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Starbucks Corp. (NASDAQ: SBUX) today reported sales of $66.0 million for the 13-week fiscal quarter ended January 2, 1994, an increase of 71% from sales of $38.6 million for the 13-week fiscal quarter ended December 27, 1992. On a comparable store sales basis (stores open for at least 13 months), sales increased 10% for the 13 weeks ended January 2, 1994 as compared to the same 13 week period in fiscal 1993.
For the fiscal month ended January 2, 1994 (5 weeks), total sales were $31.8 million, an increase of 66% from sales of $19.2 million for the five-week period ended December 27, 1992. Comparable store sales during the five week period ended January 2, 1994, increased 6% as compared to the same five week period in fiscal 1993.
The Company experienced strong sales growth in December 1993. Although, as anticipated, comparable store sales growth in December was below recent levels, strong performance of new stores (those less than one year old) continued. Accordingly, total sales for December grew by 66% over the prior year. Management said they were pleased with overall results, especially considering the exceptionally difficult comparison of 30% comparable store sales growth in December 1992.
In the first quarter of fiscal 1994, Starbucks opened 27 stores, including two licensed airport stores, bringing to 280 the total number of retail stores and licensed airport stores located in, and around, Seattle, Washington; Chicago, Illinois; Vancouver, B.C.; Portland, Oregon; Denver, Colorado; Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco, California; and Washington, D.C.
The Company plans to open at least 98 additional stores during the remainder of fiscal 1994 including stores in its three new markets -- New York, Boston and Minneapolis.
In addition to its 280 retail stores and licensed airport stores, the Company has a national direct mail business; and a specialty sales group serving a wholesale club, a specialty department store chain, a national bookstore chain, a regional airline, and fine restaurants and institutions.
