STARBUCKS COFFEE CO. AWARDED FORTUNE'S FIRST ANNUAL BEACON AWARD

SEATTLE, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- At a Chicago luncheon Tuesday, May 11, Starbucks Coffee Co. (NASDAQ-NMS: SBUX) was announced as one of three recipients of the first annual FORTUNE/American Center for Design Award for Outstanding Integrated Communications and Design.
The Beacon Award was created to recognize outstanding integrated corporate communications and design programs, and honor the companies and executives responsible for them. Companies with the greatest success in corporate communications, asserts Rob Dewey of the American Center for Design, typically pursue simultaneous excellence in their facilities, advertising, public relations and employee and community support programs.
"We are deeply honored to be recognized with the Beacon Award," stated Starbucks senior vice president of marketing, George Reynolds. "Our goal at Starbucks is to make a powerful aesthetic statement about the quality and integrity of our products, reaffirming through our visual identity the commitment we feel to providing the very best product and service for our customers."
Starbucks was chosen, along with NIKE Inc., Herman Miller Inc. and Crown Equipment Corp., from a host of 31 service and industrial companies. The June 14 issue of FORTUNE, released to newsstands May 31, will feature these companies and their exceptional communications materials, missions and goals.
