STAR TALK.

* AARON Eckhart's co-stars on Battle: Los Angeles really didn't warm to their leading man. But Aaron didn't care, because he set out to upset his colleagues.

He plays tough Marine Staff Sergeant Nantz and says: "I was horrible. I was in character all the time and I pushed the cast because I wanted this movie to be real.

"Sometimes I got mad at them and sometimes they didn't like me. That was hard. It can be a lonely feeling but you've got to do it for the sake of the film - and I think when they see it now, they appreciate it."

No-one could accuse Aaron of sticking to one type of film. He's starred in romcoms (No Reservations, Love Happens), political satires (Thank You For Smoking), low-budget dramas (Rabbit Hole) comic book blockbusters (The Dark Knight), and now an alien invasion movie.

"I like any genre of film as long as it's based in reality and the actors believe what's happening is real.

"If they don't believe it, I won't believe it," says the 42-year-old with piercing blue eyes.

When asked whether he ever takes his character home with him, it also becomes clear Eckhart doesn't have a firm base.

"There is no home," says the single man who split with actress Molly Sims in 2009. "Home is a hotel room.

"By the time I get back I'm always so tired I go straight to bed and wake up and do it again - and then one day the movie is over."

Nicole Kidman rang him up to ask him to star with her in Rabbit Hole, as did Johnny Depp for a role in forthcoming The Rum Diary.

"When people like Johnny call and say, 'Aaron do you want to come play?' I have to say yes."
