PLAYBOY racer Starborough is the best horse in Saturday's Tripleprint Celebration Mile and will surely take all the beating if he gets down to some serious business at Goodwood for a change.

Top flight wins in France and at Royal Ascot had Starborough reaching for the stars, but somewhere along the line the wheels fell off. Second place in the 1997 Sussex Stakes is the closest he's got to winning since.

"He certainly hasn't been showing the form we know he is capable of producing, and fourth place in the Sussex last month was as good as we could expect on the way he had been performing at home beforehand," said Godolphin's spokesman Simon Crisford yesterday.

"But he has done well since that race and we are looking for a good run on Saturday, so we can have a crack at some big races in the Autumn with him.

"He has to give weight away all round at Goodwood, so it's a stiff task, but we expect him to run well."

With Frankie Dettori in the sin-bin after York, Godolphin are calling on Daragh O'Donohoe to ride.

"Daragh has become a great asset to our team. Although his role has been to ride the pacemaker in some of the top races, he has won big ones for us this year in Britain, France and Germany - he's doing really well," added Crisford.

O'Donohoe's first big win after his return from Dubai was on Cape Cross in Newbury's Lockinge Stakes. That horse lost the Celebration Mile in the Stewards room after beating Among Men last year.

Stablemate City Honours has dropped out of the St Leger field.
