STAR MULTI CARE SERVICES REPORTS STRONG REVENUE GAINS FOR SECOND QUARTER AND SIX MONTH PERIODS

BROOKLYN, N.Y., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Star Multi Care Services, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMCS), today reported results for the second quarter and six months ended Nov. 30, 1992.
Revenues for the three month period increased 112 percent to $4,414,094 compared with $2,074,975 for the second quarter a year ago. Net income for the period was $55,952 or $.04 per share, compared with $123,987 or $.09 per share last year.
For the six month period ended Nov. 30, 1992, revenues reached $8,066,251, a gain of 98 percent over year earlier first half revenues of $4,057,462. Net income for the six months was $80,170 or $.06 per share versus first half net income a year ago of $224,655 or $.16 per share.
Stephen Sternbach, president and chief executive officer of Star Multi Care Services, said that the company's strong revenue performance was primarily due to the acquisition of certain assets in May 1992 of Unity Care Services, Inc. and Unity Home Care of Florida, Inc. which permitted expansion of operations into the Florida marketplace. "Moreover, there was an upward trend in our Home Care business in the second quarter and six month periods," Sternbach said. Home Care revenues grew by $2.5 million or 228 percent in the quarter and $4.2 million or 198 percent in the six months and currently represents approximately 80 percent of total revenues with Hospital Staffing representing the balance. In the 1991 periods, Home Care revenues represented approximately 52 percent of revenues and Hospital Staffing 48 percent.
"Net income for the periods under review were adversely affected by an increase in SG&A expenses, which were the result of the company's shift to home care services which requires greater administrative attention," Sternbach commented. "We believe this downward trend has stabilized, however, and any future cost increases will be offset by increased charges for services. It is important to note that despite the earnings decline, there was a significant improvement in cash flow."
