STANLEY EXECUTIVE RETIRES

NEW BRITAIN, Conn., March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Richard H. Ayers, chairman and chief executive officer of The Stanley Works (NYSE: SWK), today announced the early retirement of Robert G. Widham, group vice president, consumer/home improvement products.
Mr. Widham's retirement comes after an extended leave of absence due to illness. During Mr. Widham's absence, consumer/home improvement businesses have been reporting to R. Alan Hunter, vice president, finance and chief financial officer. This arrangement will continue for the immediate future.
According to Mr. Ayers, "Bob Widham's retirement caps a distinguished 36-year career at Stanley. After joining the company in 1957, Bob held a variety of engineering and manufacturing positions before being appointed general manager of Stanley Tools-Mexico in 1972 and Tools-France 1976. He became president and general manager of Stanley Tools-U.S. in 1982 and was elected group vice president and an officer of the company in 1985. Bob's creative, energetic and enthusiastic management style will always be identified as trademarks of the Stanley culture which he helped to create. He helped build The Stanley Works into a strong, well-managed global organization. All of us at Stanley wish Bob and his family health and happiness in the future."
