 STANFORD UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES THE PURCHASE OF THINKING MACHINES'
 CM-5 SUPERCOMPUTER SYSTEM
 STANFORD, Calif. May 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Stanford University, Stanford, Calif. and Thinking Machines Corporation of Cambridge, Mass. today announced the purchase of Thinking Machines' newest supercomputer system, the Connection Machine(R)-5 (CM-5(tm)) by the Stanford Exploration Project (SEP). The world's most powerful supercomputer system will be used to help locate and develop the world's future oil reserves.
 SEP is the world leader in reflection seismology academic research. It was founded in 1973 by 32 oil companies and oil-exploration service companies, including (see below), Amoco, British Petroleum, Chevron, Compagnie Generale de Geophysique, Exxon, Mobil, Shell, Societe Nationale Elf Aquitaine, and TOTAL. During the 20 years of its existence, SEP has led the world in applying seismic technology to oil exploration.
 The project is directed by Prof. Jon Claerbout, a pioneer of imaging seismic data using computers. "The purchase of the new Connection Machine marks the beginning of a new phase in our project which is dedicated to developing seismic applications on massively parallel computers," says director Claerbout, "This massively parallel step is very important for SEP; our industrial sponsors are quite eager to harness this new technology. Our task is to develop the new algorithms that are required for a full utilization of the computational power provided by parallel computers. We have greatly benefited from Thinking Machines' expertise in parallel algorithms applied to seismic processing."
 Seismic data is collected by oil companies to assist in locating drill-sites for oil exploration. It has also become critical in the future development of oil reservoirs currently in use. Today, the oil industry is shifting from 2-D seismic surveys to 3-D seismic surveys because of the extraordinary degree of precision that 3-D seismic provides in analyzing complicated geological structures. Because 3-D datasets can easily be several terabytes (1 billion bytes) in size, the task of processing this data requires the fastest supercomputers and most sophisticated mathematical algorithms. The system at Stanford should achieve multiple gigaflops on seismic applications.
