STANFORD TELECOM NAMED AS SYSTEM INTEGRATOR TO SUPPORT NYNEX'S ROLE ON PROJECT NORTHSTAR

 SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Stanford Telecommunications, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: STII) announced today that its System Integration Group (SIG), headquartered in Reston, Va., is currently under contract as the overall system integrator to support NYNEX's role on Project Northstar. According to Len Schuchman, President, Systems Integration Group, "Project Northstar has afforded us the opportunity to utilize our Group's expertise in GPS, digital telecommunications, wireless telephony, and command center development to provide a commercial system which fully supports the requirements of the Project's team members. Northstar is a system which will provide position enhanced services to customers requiring emergency or other assistance. In addition, the system provides for stolen vehicle tracking.
 Stanford Telecom designed and implemented the end-to-end system which will support Project Northstar's service offerings. Utilizing proprietary state-of-the-art technology, Stanford Telecom designed and developed an in-vehicle unit which enables GPS position information to be transmitted with the voice transmission over a cellular channel as well as digitally controlling all operational modes required to support the services offered by Project Northstar. In addition, Stanford Telecom designed and implemented the Project Northstar Customer Service Centers utilizing custom developed software which integrates existing commercial off-the-shelf hardware and software. The Project Northstar Customer Service Center integrates voice switches, modems, a front-end processor, maps, operator work stations and comprehensive traveler information data bases (i.e., restaurants, ATMs, hospitals, service stations, etc.), together with a GPS reference station to allow efficient, accurate, and timely processing of services being offered by Project Northstar. Project Northstar service representatives can receive multiple calls from the trial participants, display the location of the trial participant's vehicle on a digitized map, and, as required, provide routing, emergency response, and tracking services.
 Stanford Telecom's System Integration Group has supported Government agencies such as NASA, the FAA, and DoD in the area of system engineering/integration primarily for terrestrial and satellite communications systems.
