STANFORD TELECOM ANNOUNCES COMPLETION AND ACCEPTANCE OF VSAT PRODUCT FOR WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS APPLICATIONS

 SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Stanford Telecommunications Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: STII) announced that its ASIC and Custom Products Division successfully completed and received prototype acceptance of VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) satellite communications equipment developed for use in wireless communications applications. The STEL-9236 VSAT receiver module provides VSAT equipment manufacturers a complete "L-Band to data stream" receiver board and has been approved for production by a major VSAT OEM for use in a commercial background music application.
 Initial use of Stanford Telecom's equipment will be for a system that provides background music to businesses worldwide via satellite. These businesses, ranging from restaurants to hotels to retail stores, select from a variety of channels to provide an operating environment conducive to their business climate. The STEL-9236 VSAT receiver module can also be used in a variety of commercial satellite applications such as distribution of stock market data, retail point-of-sale transactions, and rural telephony. Stanford Telecom's product performs the signal processing functions required to receive the VSAT signal in the L-Band frequency range and translate it into a stream of decoded data, a required function in VSAT equipment. Orders for approximately 5,000 units have been received to date.
 Hatch Graham, vice president and general manager of Stanford Telecom's ASIC and Custom Products Division, states, "The introduction of the receiver product opens up a range of VSAT applications that require high-performance satellite communication at aggressively low costs. We are pleased with the initial response to our VSAT receiver product and believe our product offers state-of-the-art performance, yet priced below $1,000 offers an attractive alternative for VSAT manufacturers."
 The product's Bit Error Rate performance is within 3/4 dB from the theoretical optimum. To accomplish the nearly theoretical performance at a cost significantly lower than current industry trends, Stanford Telecom has developed a new high performance VLSI circuit for inclusion in the product that performs all of the complex receiver functions digitally, such as symbol timing, carrier tracking down conversion, etc. Comparable designs traditionally require a significant number of expensive and complex components to operate at a similar performance level.
