STANDARDS COUNCIL OF CANADA GRANTS UL 'CO' ACCREDITATION
NORTHBROOK, Ill., Oct. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Underwriters Laboratories

Inc. (UL) announced today that the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) has granted UL "Certification Organization" (CO) accreditation for Canada. The vote came Oct. 28 at a full meeting of the SCC in Ottawa, Ont. UL is the first safety certification organization in the United States to be granted the CO accreditation.
According to UL President Tom Castino, receiving CO accreditation is representative of UL's continuing commitment to the U.S. and Canadian Safety Systems, which will benefit manufacturers, regulatory authorities and product users alike. "With this CO accreditation, we have strengthened our long-term relationships with our safety certification counterparts in Canada by establishing our credentials there as a Certification Organization. These relationships will help manufacturers obtain dual safety certification through UL's cooperative agreements with Canadian certification organizations, which provide for the sharing of certification and standards harmonization information across the border. In this way, the length and cost of duplicate investigations can be reduced. The benefit of this accreditation is that, ultimately, manufacturers will be able to obtain the safety certifications they need to do business in both Canada and the U.S."
As part of its evaluation of UL, SCC representatives visited the four UL laboratory locations and assessed UL's capabilities in a number of areas including the technical expertise and capabilities of UL staff, including bilingual skills; control of the UL Mark; objective examination of products; systems for handling documentation; and other areas.
UL is an independent, not-for-profit organization that has been testing products in the interest of public safety since 1894. UL evaluates more than 14,000 different types of products at its facilities in Northbrook, Ill. (corporate headquarters); Melville, N.Y.; Santa Clara, Calif.; and Research Triangle Park, N.C. More than 6 billion UL Marks appear on new products each year.
