STAND-INS CORP.: NEW HOTSPOT TO OPEN AT SITE OF LEGENDARY LONE STAR CAFE
MOUNT VERNON, N.Y., June 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Barbara Kavovit, president of Stand-Ins Corporation, a commercial and industrial construction company in Westchester County, has become the second largest owner of what will become The Tropicana bar and restaurant, the company announced today. Stand-Ins Corporation will be responsible for the full renovation of the property and the restaurant is expected to open in September 1992. The Tropicana will be located at the site of the legendary Lone Star Cafe located at the prestigious 61 5th Avenue on the corner of 13th Street.
Kavovit is not only the youngest of the group of ten owners that will renovate and develop the Tropicana, she is also the only female. She began Stand-Ins Corporation at age 21 with no prior training or experience and in four years has increased sales from $0 to $2 million. Kavovit includes among her clients IBM, Polo-Ralph Lauren, Helmsley- Spear, Tischman Speyer, and last year completed new construction of the Riva Pointe Luxury Towne House project in Weehawken, N.J. for Coastal Group Developers. She recently expanded her operations by opening an office in Atlanta.
The Tropicana will include a bi-level 200 seat restaurant, a 50 seat sidewalk cafe, a roof garden and a legal third floor cabaret. The exterior which has a unique curved facade, boasts 25 foot windows overlooking 5th Avenue. The hotel sized kitchen is in the basement level. It was put in as a new installation three years ago as part of the million and a half dollar renovation that refurbished the entire building.
The restaurant, which will be open 23 hours, will feature an accessibly priced recession proof menu. This will consist of an eclectic mix of both classic and progressive American items with a strong Cuban influence. The restaurant's design will re-create the look and feel of the legendary art-deco restaurants and nightclubs that were prevalent in Cuba in the 1950s.
Kavovit's entrepreneurial spirit has been recognized by Ernst & Young, Merrill Lynch and Inc. Magazine as she was recently selected as a finalist in the Southern New England Entrepreneur of the Year Awards. Winners will be announced at an awards banquet to be held June 25, 1992.
