STAAR SURGICAL TAKES SIGNIFICANT STEP TOWARDS
 IMPROVING MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Application of Robotics Signals New Generation In Manufacturing
MONROVIA, Calif. Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- STAAR Surgical (NASDAQ: STAA) today announced an agreement with Ocutech Consultants to jointly develop the use of robotics in the manufacturing process for foldable intraocular lenses (IOLs). This new technology will allow for lenses to be molded without the residual rough edges (flashless) commonly found in other manufacturing processes.
The "flashless" lenses will still be molded at the recommended high temperatures (300o C) but at lower pressures. This, in conjunction with smoother edges, results in less waste, higher yields, and consequently, reduced manufacturing costs," stated Vladimir Feingold, STAAR's newly appointed vice president of engineering and research and development. "Molding lenses at high temperatures while reducing the amount of pressure applied will mean exerting less wear and tear on our molds and tooling while achieving smooth edges and a consistently cured lens -- this is of tremendous significance to the lens manufacturing industry," he concluded.
Ocutech Consultants have patented the rudimentary process that STAAR now seeks to automate. Upon successful completion of the application of this process STAAR will obtain exclusive IOL manufacturing rights. "We believe, that, as a result of these changes, our high volume, low cost manufacturing process will enable us to manufacture a lens that can be sold and utilized by physicians on a worldwide basis, including third world countries; reduced unit costs for the lenses means that this technology will be made more accessible to those who need it," said LaMar Laster, chairman of the company.
STAAR Surgical is recognized in the industry for its technological development and research. "We have consistently strived to create new standards in the production of our lenses. In addition to automating our manufacturing process, we are, to my knowledge, the only IOL manufacturer that produces its lenses in a "Class 100" Clean Room Environment. This means less than 100 particles of debris per square centimeter of air in our manufacturing rooms compared to the 10,000 particles found in those of our competitors," said Laster.
Other achievements in the manufacturing process made by STAAR Surgical include the use of a newly adopted .2 micron filtering process developed three years ago by the Canon-STAAR subsidiary (owned jointly with the Canon Companies, Tokyo) in Japan. "Our ultra-clean environment and our newly adopted .2 micron filtering process makes our production process the cleanest and most efficient of all operators in the IOL industry," said Laster
STAAR Surgical, founded in 1982, develops, manufactures and markets products for small-incision surgery, primarily for use in cataract procedures.
