ST. LUCIE UNIT 1 RETURNS TO SERVICE

ST. LUCIE UNIT 1 RETURNS TO SERVICE
HUTCHINSON ISLAND, Fla., Dec. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Florida Power &

Light Company's St. Lucie Nuclear Unit 1 has returned to service following a scheduled refueling outage.
The 839-megawatt unit was removed from service in October to take on an 18-month supply of fuel, replacing approximately one-third of the reactor's 217 uranium fuel assemblies. This is enough fuel to offset the burning of about 32,000 barrels of oil a day.
Since they began operation, the two nuclear units at St. Lucie have displaced about 4.5 million barrels of oil, resulting in a fuel savings for customers of approximately $2.6 billion. Nuclear fuel costs are about one-third the cost of burning oil to generate electricity, with no air pollution.
St. Lucie Unit 1 has one of the best capacity factors -- a statistic that measures operating efficiency -- in the world. In 1991, through Sept. 30, Unit 1's capacity factor was 95.4 percent compared to the U.S. nuclear industry average of 63 percent.
