ST. FRANCIS HOTEL SINGS 'CITY OF POETS' TO SAN FRANCISCO

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- 11:55 a.m. October 21, 1993. Union Square. A voice cascades from the top of the St. Francis Hotel. CITY of POETS launch begins.
Celebrating poems and the people who make them CITY of POETS rolls out months of activities on Thursday, Oct. 21, in San Francisco on behalf of the Friends of the San Francisco Library.
Emmit Powell's Gospel Elites will start the jubilee with an aria sung from the top of the St. Francis Hotel. The San Francisco Giants' community affairs director Jan Hutchins will join the program to inaugurate "Poets at Bat -- hitting one home for our public libraries."
Other appearances will include poets Janice Mirikitani, Guy Johnson, and Francisco Alarcon, rapster A.K. Black, senior poets, and internationally renowned dancer Tandy Beale.
Finally, 275 children conducted by Joseph Bryant will sing an oratorio based on Maya Angelou's Inaugural poem composed by Bobby McFerrin's Voicestra.
CITY of POETS is creating an explosion of contests, readings and happenings to inspire people to make their own poetry to look away from the TV and into their souls. There will be poetry everywhere they look. On billboards. On the local bus lines. Even in booths containing poets writing poems on request. Some say San Francisco has more poets than any other city.
CITY of POETS takes poetry off the bookshelves and into the streets to make more poetry, to fill more libraries.
