ST INTRODUCES 24 INDUSTRY-STANDARD SUPERVISOR CHIPS.

STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM) has introduced 24 industry standard supervisor chips, produced using a manufacturing flow that will reduce lead times to as little as four weeks, compared to the typical 12 or more weeks of processing and assembly time required by other suppliers.

These 5V and 3/3.3V supervisors are suitable for virtually all applications. Anything that requires monitoring is a candidate for these chips including medical equipment, metering, servers, ADSL, point-of-sale, NVRAM, automotive, instrumentation and industrial hardware. All 24 devices include multiple supervisor functions. Common to all is Power-On Reset/Low-Voltage Detect, which monitors the system power and resets the system processor when the voltage is out of tolerance. A Watchdog, such as on the STM690A and several others, protects the system against runaway software.

Many of the parts, such as the STM706, have a Manual Reset Input. The STM802, like most of the others, includes a Battery Switchover circuit which can be used to battery back other components in the system. Coupled with a coin cell battery, the Switchover circuit turns a low-power SRAM into an NVRAM automatically switching to the battery when Vcc fails. Perfect for NVRAM applications, the STM795 also includes a Chip-Enable Gate (Write-Protect) function.

Active-high and active-low Reset output polarities are offered, and the STM707 and 708 include both. Most of the parts include a PFI/PFO circuit (Power-Fail In/Power-Fail Out) which can be used to implement an Early Power-Fail Warning function or to monitor a second voltage supply. All the 3/3.3V parts include options for 2.63V, 2.93V and 3.08V reset thresholds while the 5V parts offer 4.4V and 4.65V threshold options. Counting all the voltage options, there are 46 different part numbers.

These chips are offered in a lead-free 8-pin SOIC package with an 8-pin TSSOP available in Q1 2005. They operate over the industrial temperature range (40 to +85 degrees C) and are 100% pin-compatible drop-ins to parts commonly available throughout the industry.

Samples of the all 24 devices available through ST sales offices and distributors now. At mid-range volume, US pricing ranges from $0.25 for the STM706 to $1.30 for the STM795.
