SRI INTERNATIONAL/ASM INTERNATIONAL BUCKMINSTERFULLERENE SYMPOSIUM

SRI INTERNATIONAL/ASM INTERNATIONAL BUCKMINSTERFULLERENE SYMPOSIUM
MENLO PARK, Calif., May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- SRI International, in conjunction with ASM International, will present a symposium entitled "Buckminsterfullerenes, a.k.a., Buckyballs '1991 Molecule of the Year'" from 1:30 to 5 p.m. on May 28, 1992, in the SRI International Auditorium. Buckyballs are hollow spheres of 60 carbon atoms arranged in a series of hexagons and pentagons resembling the geodesic domes built by Buckminster Fuller, hence the name. Because of their configuration, it is believed that they can be used with other molecules for form carbon-based derivatives.
Featured speakers at the Symposium will be Don Lorents, SRI International, Molecular Physics Laboratory; Don Bethune, IBM, Almaden Research Center; and Joel Hawkins, UC Berkeley, Department of Chemistry. The speakers will discuss the different sorts of fullerene molecules that can be produced; methods for determining how different types of molecules can be identified and modified; and what kinds of applications San Francisco Bay Area researchers are currently working on.
Registration for the symposium is $30 if received by May 22, or $40 at the door. Mail pre-registration checks, payable to ASM International, to P.O. Box 60487, Sunnyvale, CA 94089-0487. Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will be served immediately following the symposium.
