SQUAT, SMOOTH REGGIE AND SOFT JACK ENHANCE NEW BOOK'S ECCENTRIC CAST

SQUAT, SMOOTH REGGIE AND SOFT JACK ENHANCE NEW BOOK'S ECCENTRIC CAST
TROY, Mich., Nov. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Artist/cartoonist Tom Roy's first book, "A Scot Gallery Eccentric: Wry Tales of a Little-Known Realm," defies categorization. Momentum Books managing editor Tom Ferguson tried anyway.
"A remarkable piece of dogged research and droll revisionism," Ferguson said, "though the bookstores probably will shelve it under 'visual humor.'"
In any case, a few minutes spent with Roy terriers Mad Herman Argyle, Mule (a "misguided soul not responsible for his stubborn passions") and the rest mark them as a breed apart.
Squat ("unpleasant"), Smooth Reggie and the others comprise a mock- historic lineage illustrating a full range of human foibles and eccentricities.
"A Scot Gallery Eccentric" (hardbound; $14.95; Momentum Books Ltd.; Troy, Mich.) is the work of a Lathrup Village artist who has been painting and drawing in various media for 30 years. Tom Roy ran his own animation company for a decade, and continues to work in television graphics. Detroit Free Press readers know Roy as the creator of "The Pitts," which appears on the Feature Page.
As Momentum Books' first title under a new representation and distribution arrangement with National Book Network, "A Scot Gallery's" national publication date is Jan. 1, 1993. It will be available this month in Detroit-area stores.
A limited edition of color prints based on four characters from "A Scot Gallery" will debut Nov. 28 along with the book at the Belian Art Center in Troy. The exhibit, through the end of the year, also will include original acrylic paintings and an entertaining new collection of wearable art. Call 313-828-1001 for exhibit information.
