SQUARE D'S RAPID RESPONSE HELPING TO PUT WORLD TRADE CENTER BACK IN BUSINESS

NEW YORK, March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Square D Company is putting its "We Respond"(SM) business philosophy to the test, helping to restore New York's World Trade Center to full operation as soon as possible.
The company will supply the Trade Center with custom-assembled electrical equipment valued at approximately a million dollars within the next month. The equipment will supply power to temporary chillers needed to heat and cool the Trade Center buildings.
According to David Dillinger, Square D district sales manager for the New York area, the order involves delivery schedules of one month or less -- an exceptional situation for electrical industry products that normally quote lead times for orders of at least 20 weeks.
"The bomb blast on Feb. 26 destroyed or severely damaged most of the Trade Center's chillers and associated electrical equipment," Dillinger said. "The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns and manages the property, concluded that the quickest and most effective path to reopening the Trade Center was to install new temporary chillers."
Dillinger and Richard Hepp, Square D senior field engineer, had been assisting the Port Authority since the blast. After presenting a bid on March 15, Dillinger and Hepp spent all of March 16 reviewing and revising designs with the Port Authority's Fred Marks, purchasing agent, and Jack Buchsbaum, chief electrical engineer.
Ken Swanson, Square D inside engineer, coordinated arrangements with manufacturing facilities in Smyrna, Tenn.; Schiller Park, Ill.; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Milwaukee to finalize the order by 8:00 p.m. on the 16th.
The Square D order calls for delivery of four sets of electrical equipment by April 7, with the remainder due on-site by April 15. Major components include eleven 13.8kv vacuum circuit breakers, thirteen transformers rated from 1,000 to 2,500kva, eight 5kv load interrupters, and ten 480/277-volt switchboards. All equipment is 3R rated by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association.
Because the Trade Center's basement area was severely damaged, the electrical equipment will be located on two adjacent streets which have been closed. Holes will be drilled in the streets for power cables.
"The key to this job is the ability and desire of all of the Square D plants involved," Dillinger said. "The people at all of these locations have made personal commitments to meet extremely urgent and almost unheard of delivery requirements."
Square D Company is a key business of Schneider North America -- one of three geographic entities of the industrial businesses of Groupe Schneider, headquartered in Paris. With 1992 sales of approximately $11 billion, Groupe Schneider is a global leader in electrical distribution, automation and industrial control products, systems and services.
