SPRINT WINS $5 MILLION DOD AWARD FOR TELECOM EQUIPMENT
WASHINGTON, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) today announced that it will offer digital channel bank equipment, installation and training to federal agencies through an award from the Defense Commercial Communications Office (DECCO). The eight-year contract is estimated to be worth in excess of $5 million.
The digital channel banks will benefit both defense and civilian federal agencies by linking their network requirements with FTS2000, the government's advanced, cost-effective telecommunications network.
These units "multiplex," or mix, data and voice signals from government-owned private branch exchanges (PBXs), private lines, modems and computers, to a standard T-1 (1.544 Mbps) high-speed signal that can interface with the FTS2000 Network.
Sprint will provide the Telco Systems, Inc.-manufactured Route 24 digital channel bank. Telco Systems, Inc., based in Norwood, Mass., is a leading supplier of fiber-optic transmission and T-1 network access equipment for the telecommunications industry. Sprint will offer the systems in the United States, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
"This award highlights the systems integration and program management capabilities Sprint offers to the federal government," said Chris Rooney, president of the Government Systems Division which manages Sprint's business with the federal government. "We look to expand the number and range of these requirements-type contracts where Sprint can provide turnkey, off-the-shelf solutions by teaming with the industry's leading manufacturers and suppliers."
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.8 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, and local telephone services to more than 4 million subscriber lines in 17 states.
