SPRINT TO SPONSOR WORLD CUP SOCCER, DONATE MONEY TO L.A. KANSAS CITY, Mo., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) today announced it would present a check for $10,000 to help rebuild Los Angeles, offer free long distance calls and award a year of free long distance calling during the Los Angeles Friendship Cup soccer tournament being held July 31-Aug. 2. The United States World Cup Team will compete in the tournament, which also includes Mexico, Brazil and Colombia, today and on Sunday, Aug. 2, in Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Sprint will donate $10,000 during halftime of the U.S. and Brazil game on Sunday to the "Rebuild L.A." project to help restore riot-torn parts of Los Angeles. Sprint, a major sponsor of the tournament, will offer those attending the event free three-minute calls to anywhere in the world and a chance to win a year of free long distance in a sweepstakes drawing. "Soccer is a sport of unparalleled worldwide appeal and athleticism," said Jorge Rodriquez, Sprint's vice president- advertising and marketing communications. "Sprint wants to play a major role in bringing the best soccer players in the world to America and raising the level of American interest in the sport to new heights." Los Angeles will be the site of the 1994 FIFA World Cup championship game. The game is scheduled to be played in The Rose Bowl on July 17, 1994. FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) is soccer's international governing body. World Cup USA 1994 is the non-profit organization charged with staging the 1994 World Cup championship in the United States under the direction of FIFA. The 1994 event marks the first time that the world championships have been played in the United States. The World Cup games are viewed by more people around the globe than any other sporting event.
