SPRINT TO RENAME SUBSIDIARY IN CANADA; CALL-NET LONG DISTANCE SERVICES TO TAKE SPRINT BRAND NAME

WASHINGTON, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) today announced plans to change the name of its Canadian-based subsidiary from Sprint Communications Canada Inc. to Sprint International of Canada Inc. The name change will allow Call-Net Telecommunications Ltd. -- Sprint's alliance partner in Canada -- to assume the name of Sprint Canada Inc. in launching business and residential long-distance products and services.
Sprint International of Canada Inc., with offices in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, will remain a separate entity in Canada and will continue to manage Sprint Corporation's interests and relationships with Canadian carriers, as well as to market Sprint's international data communications and other services in Canada. The subsidiary also will continue to be the primary distributor of packet and frame relay equipment manufactured by the Alcatel-Sprint joint venture -- Alcatel Data Networks.
The name change is the latest step in the Sprint-Call-Net alliance. First announced on Aug. 4, the alliance calls for Sprint to provide access to its intellectual property and intelligent network capabilities in exchange for a 25 percent equity stake in Call-Net Enterprises Inc., which is the parent company of the newly named Sprint Canada Inc.
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with more than $10 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, local telephone services to nearly 6 million subscriber lines in 19 states, and cellular operations that serve 42 metropolitan markets and more than 50 rural service areas.
