SPRINT TO PROVIDE NATIONWIDE SUBSCRIBER NETWORK
FOR DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE MARKET REPORTS
WASHINGTON, May 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) today announced that is has received a contract from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a network to distribute Market News Reports to subscribers throughout the United States, including regional USDA offices, agriculture-based businesses and news wire services.
According to the terms of the contract, which is valued at $4 million over seven years, Sprint will integrate its SprintNet public data network and SprintMail services with a satellite system supplied by sub-contractor GTE SpaceNet.
The USDA and cooperating state agencies compile the reports and feed them into SprintNet for immediate transmission up to an orbiting satellite. Each subscriber will receive the Market News Reports directly from the satellite via a very small aperture terminal (VSAT), or micro earth station, installed on their premises.
Non-government subscribers who do not require the reports on an "up-to-the-minute" basis can simply dial into SprintNet. Using their SprintMail identification numbers, they can obtain the desired reports from a bulletin board where the information is retained for five days.
"The network is designed to enable USDA to provide its Market News Reports subscribers with the information they need in a fast, flexible and cost-effective manner," said Chuck Brock, acting vice president of sales for Sprint's Government Systems Division, which manages the company's business with the federal government.
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.8 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, and local telephone services to more than 4 million subscriber lines in 17 states.
