SPRINT SPONSORS BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIP

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) today announced it is sponsoring the 1993 Yonex U.S. Open Badminton Championship at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Sept. 21-26.
The 1993 U.S. Open is the most prestigious badminton competition in North America, comparable to the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament. It brings together the top men and women from more than 16 countries, including many from their respective Olympic teams. The U.S. Open, the only internationally sanctioned badminton event in the United States, features more than 150 athletes competing over six days in singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
Badminton is not as popular in the United States as it is in countries such as China, Great Britain, Indonesia, and Denmark, among others. The United States Badminton Association, the national governing body for the sport in the United States, wants to promote the growth of badminton in this country.
"By sponsoring this tournament, we're helping to raise awareness of badminton in the United States," said Patti Manuel, president of Sprint's Business Services Group. "Right now, this country has few world-class players, but through these types of events, we can support and promote the sport and prepare some of the best players for the Olympic games."
Badminton is played by volleying a shuttlecock back and forth over a high net with a light, long-handled racket. More than 250 million people worldwide play badminton -- it ranks second only to soccer as the most popular participation sport in the world. Badminton is especially popular in Asia, where more than 150 million people play the game; it is played by 13.5 million in the United States.
Badminton was a full medal sport at the 1992 Summer Olympic games in Barcelona, Spain and will return in 1996 at the Summer Games in Atlanta.
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with more than $10 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, local telephone services to nearly 5.9 million subscriber lines in 19 states, and cellular operations that serve 42 metropolitan markets and more than 50 rural service areas.
