SPRINT INTRODUCES INDUSTRY'S FIRST PACKAGE OF FRAME RELAY BACKUP OPTIONS

WASHINGTON, March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Building upon its leadership role in reliable frame relay services, Sprint (NYSE: FON) today introduced Sprint Frame Relay Disaster Recovery Services, the industry's first full portfolio of frame relay backup options. This capability complements Sprint's built-in network redundancy and automatic rerouting.
Frame relay is a high-speed data transfer technology which enables geographically dispersed Local Area Networks (LANs) to communicate with each other.
In the first live demonstration of its kind, Sprint will show the reliability of its Frame Relay Disaster Recovery Services at the Interop '93 exposition here (booth No. 2207).
Sprint is the first long distance carrier to offer customers an easy way to extend the reliability and availability of the frame relay network all the way back to the customer's premises.
Through this service, customers can back up network facilities outside the Sprint Frame Relay network and even handle failures such as local telephone company and customer host outages.
The Interop demonstration will include a file transfer session between two workstations -- and through Sprint's TP4900 Frame Relay switch at the Interop Frame Relay Solutions Showcase booth No. 2229 on the trade show floor. To demonstrate the backup capability, a Sprint representative will use a wire cutter to disconnect the primary network frame relay connection to the first workstation at the router. Immediate backup will occur, as router number one initiates a Sprint VPN Switched 56 call to router number two.
"Our customers have told us they need additional redundancies for frame relay applications outside the frame relay network, to ensure end-to-end reliability," said Dom DeAngelo, vice president, data product management. "This service is the first time a carrier has offered customers all these alternatives in a single package."
Sprint's frame relay backup services provide customers a choice of four options that can be initiated in the event of a service disruption:
 -- Local Exchange Carrier Back-Up
 -- Back-Up Access Channel
 -- Access Switch Back-Up
 -- Host Disaster Recovery
Customers can customize these services to meet specific site requirements.
(Frame relay service redundancies are already built into Sprint's network and Sprint's TP4900 data switches. Sprint automatically reroutes traffic in the unlikely event of any problems with network connections.)
Sprint's Frame Relay Service combines the performance of private lines with the bandwidth efficiency and superior connectivity of packet switching. The service uses Sprint's TP4900 (High Performance) frame relay platform switching technology and is suited especially for bursty, data-intensive applications such as LAN internetworking, image transfer and client/server exchange. Because frame relay supports multiple simultaneous sessions, customers save on equipment, line and operational costs while enjoying data rates ranging up to 1.536 kilobits-per-second.
Sprint provides complete network management services for its data communications services; 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week customer support; and sophisticated sales and customer service to assist customers in choosing and using the best data services for "Sprint's Frame Relay network provides more access options, multi-service gateways, and the widest selection of frame relay service options in the industry," said DeAngelo. "Industry experts have recognized Sprint's frame relay equipment certification program as the best. In addition to testing compliance with frame relay standards, Sprint further ensures interoperability through verification testing with its frame relay network.
"Our recently developed certification seal of approval will be provided to all vendors who have successfully passed our stringent certification process."
