SPRINT INTRODUCES DIRECT DIAL VOICE SERVICE TO CAMBODIA
WASHINGTON, Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Following the recent lifting of the U.S. embargo to Cambodia, Sprint became the only U.S. carrier to offer telecommunications services to that country.
The new Sprint service to Cambodia is direct-dial (no operator necessary).
"Once again, Sprint has broken new ground by being the first U.S. carrier to offer direct-dial service from the United States to a newly accessible part of the world," said Paolo Guidi, president of Sprint International, Sprint's global telecommunications and private networks subsidiary. On Jan. 10, Sprint inaugurated the first direct dial service from the United States to all 15 republics of the former Soviet Union.
"We are very pleased with our agreement with Sprint to establish direct communications between Cambodia and the United States," said Neth Chroeung, director general of the Department of Post and Telecommunications. "It is an important step in furthering relations between our two countries and for economic development here in Cambodia."
Calling home will now be easier and much more economical for the 300,000-400,000 Cambodians currently living in the United States because they no longer will be forced to use overpriced interconnect services through third countries. They need only dial "011" for an international line (or "01" using FONCARD), then the Cambodian country code "855", the city code, the five-digit Cambodian number and the "Number Sign" key to ensure the fastest connections. Non-Sprint customers may access the Sprint network by dialing "10333" before "011."
Sprint's new service is now operational to Phnom Penh (city code "23"), with service to other cities available soon.
Sprint and the Cambodian Department of Post and Telecommunications are planning to provide a messenger service to better reach Cambodians in remote locations.
"For the first time in a dozen years, the United States has a direct link to Cambodia," said Dave Schmieg, president of Sprint's Customer Services Group. "While service to certain areas of Cambodia may be limited due to the quality of Cambodia's internal network, direct telephone service will help strengthen links between the United States and Cambodia."
With the addition of Cambodia, Sprint offers direct dial voice service to approximately 200 countries around the world.
Sprint is a unit of United Telecommunications, Inc. (NYSE: UT), a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.7 billion in revenues. Sprint, with the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network, provides a comprehensive array of global voice, data and video communications products and services.
