SPRINT INTRODUCES CELLULAR DIGITAL MESSAGING SERVICES

 KANSAS CITY, Mo., June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) today introduced the first-ever enhanced digital services for cellular customers in the Southwest -- an offering that can transform a cellular phone into a personal communications center.
 Sprint Cellular Co.'s Digital Messaging Services, developed by Motorola and now available in the Las Vegas area, allow cellular phones to be used as pagers. In addition, Digital Messaging Services allow cellular users to store messages for easy access and call-back purposes. Starting today, Sprint Cellular customers can enjoy the following new benefits with Digital Messaging Services:
 -- A Sprint customer can now receive a prepared short text message, such as "Call Home" or a customized text message, on the display screen of their cellular phone;
 -- A Sprint customer can be alerted that a voice mail message has been received and retrieve it by simply pressing the "send" key on the cellular handset;
 -- Unlike conventional paging, if a Sprint customer's phone is busy, turned off or out of a service area, a caller's message still gets through. After 20 minutes, messages that have not been received by the cellular user are digitized and converted into their voice mail;
 -- If a caller would like to send a message to a group of cellular users, they dial the group's identification number rather than an individual's phone number, making communication to multiple people quick and easy; and
 -- Messages will be sent until a Sprint customer acknowledges receipt. This confirmation makes it possible for a caller to verify the status of a message.
 Digital Messaging Services Help Customers Work Smarter
 In announcing Digital Messaging Services, Dennis Foster, president and chief operating officer of Sprint Cellular, said: "This enhancement gives Sprint customers even more value and convenience. With Digital Messaging Services, our cellular customers can eliminate their pagers and gain greater control over their personal communications. Digital Messaging Services represent another step in delivering services that make our customers more productive and secure."
 To take advantage of these new digital features, Sprint Cellular customers will need portable cellular phones with Digital Messaging Services capabilities available to them by Motorola, a supplier of cellular equipment for Sprint Cellular. Customers using Digital Messaging Services will pay a monthly fee of $9.95.
 "We chose southern Nevada as the first market to offer Digital Messaging Services because the percentage of cellular users per capita and number of customers using portable phones rather than mobile phones ranks it first in the nation," Foster said. "Our philosophy is to deliver what the customer wants.
 Through innovative services such as DMS, companies like Sprint Cellular and Motorola will lead the industry in customer satisfaction by forging alliances that best meet the customers' needs."
 Sprint Cellular First to Deploy Another Motorola Technology
 All of these features are made possible by a new digital control channel between the cell site antenna and a Sprint customer's cellular phone. Digital signaling and control is a key feature of Motorola's Narrowband Advanced Mobile Phone Service (NAMPS) technology. NAMPS not only provides digital features, but also improves call quality and privacy and triples Sprint's system capacity in southern Nevada. Sprint Cellular was the first cellular company in the world to commercialize NAMPS in 1992.
