SPRINT EXTENDS GLOBAL FRAME RELAY NETWORK TO CANADA, FRANCE AND GERMANY

WASHINGTON, March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) today announced the expansion of its global public frame relay network to include Canada, France and Germany. Sprint is now accepting customer orders for service between the new locations, the United Kingdom and the United States.
"By extending its service to Canada, France and Germany, Sprint is continuing the global expansion of its frame relay service to the world's commercial centers," said Leigh Saunders, director of emerging and strategic services for Sprint International, Sprint's global telecommunications subsidiary. "The quality of transmission facilities in these countries will support a high-performance frame relay service for Sprint's multinational customers."
Frame relay is a high-speed, bandwidth-on-demand service designed to provide cost-effective connectivity for geographically dispersed networks, offering a common link for personal computer, local area network (LAN), and SNA users.
In addition, the service offers users economical, high-capacity bandwidth when needed -- such as to transfer a file between personal computers or to support financial and medical imaging applications.
Sprint -- unlike most other frame relay service providers -- offers a committed information rate (CIR) which ensures a minimum sustained throughput at which traffic flows through the network. The service permits sustained "bursting" above a customer's requested CIR -- up to the full access channel capacity.
Sprint's CIR capability provides the most cost-effective international frame relay service since customers are charged a flat rate for the CIR that they select, and not for excess -- bursted -- traffic.
Sprint's global frame relay network also includes service in the United Kingdom and United States, with service to 25 countries planned by the end of 1993. International frame relay service is offered at access speeds of up to 256 Kbps, depending on local network facilities.
Sprint introduced the industry's first, and still most thorough, frame relay certification program. Sprint led in advocating and developing frame relay standards, and is the only public service provider to use its own frame relay switches -- the TP4900 and TP4900F Series. Sprint has shipped TP4900 switches and line cards which can support more than 27,000 frame relay ports, making it the leading supplier of frame relay systems worldwide.
Sprint is a $10 billion international telecommunications company, providing voice, video and data networking solutions to the world's commercial, government and financial centers. Sprint operates fiber- optic and value-added networks that are among the world's largest, and maintains offices in six continents through its over 50 subsidiaries, joint ventures and distributor partners.
