 WASHINGTON, Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- In major nationwide industry forums this week, customers will use Sprint's Asynchronous Transfer Mode to demonstrate business applications such as environmental impact analysis and interactive computer-aided design combined with videoconferencing.
 "In various forums this week, we will see concrete examples of how organizations are using ATM -- right now -- to remotely collaborate on design, manufacturing, and research and development projects," said Don Teague, vice president and general manager of Sprint's Government Systems Division. "These demonstrations show how American companies can leverage the country's information and computing resources for commercial purposes using available products and services."
 ATM is a data communications technology that lets users send large amounts of voice, data and video information simultaneously over the same high-speed circuit, a requirement for "information highway" applications.
 -- On Nov. 18, the National Information Infrastructure Testbed, an industry-led coalition of corporations, universities and government agencies, will launch an ongoing application that will use Sprint's ATM to connect corporate researchers at far-flung locations, allowing them to exchange and evaluate massive amounts of environmental data.
 The demonstration will be the first product of the coalition's efforts to accelerate the growth of the information superhighway. It will be staged from 2-4 p.m. at Sprint's Applied Technology Center in Washington, along with other NIIT sites across the country, as well as at Supercomputing '93.
 -- At Supercomputing '93, a supercomputer trade show being held this week in Portland, Ore., Sprint's ATM will support a demonstration of the same NIIT environmental application. Sprint also will brief attending media on the importance of the NIIT to industry and government.
 Also at the show, Boeing will use Sprint's ATM service to link research facilities in Bellevue, Wash., with the Portland Convention Center in a demonstration that lets engineers at remote locations see and speak with one another while interactively working on a three- dimensional modeling application.
 -- At the 7th Annual Conference on Next-Generation Networks, a leading forum on broadband networks in Washington Nov. 15-18, workstations linked via Sprint's nationwide ATM service will create a "virtual conference setting," enabling demonstrators at the show and at Sprint's Kansas City, Mo., headquarters to see each other through a video link and simultaneously work on collaborative applications such as electronic whiteboards -- an on-line slate that lets engineers use the screen like a shared wall-mounted board.
 Organizers of the conference said the computer-based demonstrations over Sprint's national ATM network "add an exciting new dimension to the conference" and that the demonstrations show attendees that "ATM technology is not all out in the future, but can be employed today using off-the-shelf products."
 Chris Rooney, president of Sprint's Data Services and Government Systems Division, will represent Sprint on a corporate panel on Tuesday, Nov. 16, exploring how ATM and other broadband technologies are influencing decisions and strategies in the boardroom.
 At the Computer Aided Acquisition and Logistics Support Expo in Atlanta earlier this month, Sprint's ATM enabled the first wide-area network demonstration of interactive computer-aided design over ATM, allowing engineers at separate sites to simultaneously work on three- dimensional images and designs using sophisticated workstations. The application was provided by Concurrent Technologies Corp. of Johnstown, Pa., and the Aerospace Division of Allied Signal Corp. of Kansas City, Mo.
 Sprint's broadband leadership -- which includes the first nationwide ATM service and customer, Hughes Aircraft Company -- extends to a number of other recent information highway initiatives. In late October, Sprint was selected to provide an electronic network for the Mid-America Manufacturing Technology Center -- a group of mid-Western manufacturers -- under one of the first "defense conversion" grants by the Clinton administration.
 In September, it formed a joint marketing agreement to create the first commercial superhighway applications with Minnesota Supercomputer Center. The company also participates in gigabit testbeds including the NIIT and the Multidimensional Applications and Gigabit Internetwork Consortium -- MAGIC -- an industry/academia/government testbed for high- capacity network research.
