SPRINT DONATES DATA SERVICES TO ASSIST FATHER FLANAGAN'S BOYS' HOME
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Sprint (NYSE: FON) today announced the donation of SprintNet data services, connecting Father Flanagan's Boys' Home in Boys Town, Neb., with its other sites throughout the country.
With the new services, the Boys Town home campus near Omaha, Neb., will be able to send and receive up-to-the-minute information via computer about the progress and special needs of troubled boys and girls at the 12 other Boys Town USA locations. The data services also will help the home campus to train and communicate with staff members at distant locations, as well as evaluate their job performance and the programs they offer their youths.
"These new data services will give us a daily 'snapshot' of our programs at other locations," said Daniel L. Daly, director of program planning, research and evaluation at Boys Town. "Each location will send a morning report electronically to headquarters by 10 a.m. that will help us monitor children and their progress better than ever before."
"The money saved by Sprint's generous donation will be directly applied to helping even more children who are disadvantaged," said the Rev. Val J. Peter, executive director of Boys Town.
"We want to change the way America takes care of its disadvantaged children," Peter said. "Our national expansion is one of the ways in which we are attempting to realize our vision. This donation makes Sprint a partner in this vision to help thousands upon thousands of disadvantaged children."
All satellite locations of Father Flanagan's Boys' Home will be using Sprint's DataCall Plus, a dial-access service of the SprintNet Global Data Network, to connect to computer resources at Boys Town.
"Sprint knows the future of America rests with its children," said William G. Pfeiffer, senior vice president, Sprint Data Group. "This donation of data services will increase the scope of Boys Town and widen the window of opportunity for those who need the organization's quality programs."
Father Flanagan's Boys' Home, known worldwide as Boys Town, and its satellite locations serve nearly 1,200 youths ages 2 to 18 on a daily basis. More than 500 boys and girls attend school, participate in extracurricular activities and learn vocational skills on campus in Boys Town. Nearly 700 other youths live and are educated in a variety of community-based settings in other Boys Town locations across the country.
In addition to the flagship campus in Boys Town, Boys Town USA sites are located in Anaheim, Calif.; Brooklyn, N.Y.; Delray Beach, Fla.; Glenwood, Iowa; Grand Island, Neb.; Las Vegas; Lincoln, Neb.; New Orleans; Orlando, Fla.; Portsmouth, R.I.; San Antonio; and Tallahassee, Fla. A facility in Washington, D.C., is scheduled to open, and additional locations are planned.
SprintNet is a single-vendor communications package of network service, modems, lines and network management. DataCall Plus allows users to dial a local number to access the network, which is supported by Sprint's all-digital, fiber-optic backbone.
Sprint is a diversified international telecommunications company with $8.9 billion in annual revenues and the United States' only nationwide all-digital, fiber-optic network. Its divisions provide global long distance voice, data and video products and services, and local telephone services to more than 4 million subscriber lines in 17 states.
